The Minderoo Exmouth Research Lab (MERL) plays a critical role in safeguarding local ocean ecosystems, in the World Heritage listed Nyinggulu Ningaloo Reef and adjacent Exmouth Gulf regions.
Overview
The Minderoo Exmouth Research Lab (MERL) enables high-quality, high-impact marine science on the World Heritage listed Nyinggulu Ningaloo Reef and adjacent Exmouth Gulf.
The lab plays a critical role in supporting researchers to conduct science that ultimately increases protection of biodiversity and reduces harmful impacts on ocean ecosystems.
This unique facility achieves the level of sophisticated environmental control required to simulate typical conditions associated with climate change including temperature variance through the aquaria system. To maximise outcomes in its idyllic and remote location, the lab is equipped with sophisticated molecular testing equipment alongside its advanced experimental capabilities.
Combining the aquaria and genetics lab under one roof in an ecologically significant location allows for critical, impactful research, with genuine management outcomes. Through a competitive Expression of Interest program, the lab is supporting a range of research including identifying heat-resilient corals, using environmental DNA to understand the distribution of critically endangered species such as sawfish, wedgefish and sea snakes, and understanding the behavioural patterns of several iconic megafauna species.
